The Landscaping Decisions That Deliver Value, and the Ones That Create Future Problems

Spring is often the season of action.  Garden centres are busy, plants are looking their best, and outdoor projects suddenly move from “one day” to “right now”.  It’s the time of year when many property owners invest in new landscapes, refresh existing gardens, or tackle projects that have been sitting on their to-do lists throughout Winter.

But beneath the excitement of new planting and fresh designs lies an important reality: The most expensive landscaping decisions are rarely the ones you make after a garden is established.  They’re the ones you make before the first plant goes into the ground.

At BEST Landscaping, we’ve seen it countless times.  Many of the challenges that emerge years later can be traced back to decisions made during the planning stage.  The good news is that careful thinking at the beginning often prevents costly corrections later.

Most gardens are designed for the moment they are installed.  The plants are placed, the edges are neat, the colours are carefully chosen and for a brief moment, everything feels complete.

But the real question is: what happens after that?

At BEST Landscaping, we believe the most successful gardens aren’t those that look perfect on day one.  They’re the ones that grow into themselves over time, spaces that become richer, more layered, and more meaningful with each passing season.

The Appeal of Instant Results

It’s understandable.  When planning a garden, most people naturally focus on how the space will look immediately after installation.  The temptation is to create an instant transformation with mature plants, tightly packed beds, and features that deliver immediate impact.

But gardens don’t stand still.

Plants grow.  Trees mature.  Root systems expand.  Light conditions change. Maintenance requirements evolve.  A landscape designed solely for day one can quickly become overcrowded, difficult to manage, and far more expensive to maintain than originally anticipated.

The most successful gardens are designed for what they will become, not simply for how they will look when the project is completed.

Choosing Plants for the Wrong Reasons

One of the most common landscaping mistakes is selecting plants based primarily on appearance.  A photograph, a seasonal display, or a popular trend can make a plant seem like the perfect choice.  Yet every plant comes with its own requirements, growth habits, and long-term implications.  Questions worth asking include:

  • Is it suited to local conditions?
  • How large will it become?
  • How much water will it require?
  • How much maintenance will it need?
  • Will it complement the surrounding landscape as it matures?

A plant that looks beautiful today may become problematic if it outgrows its space or demands more resources than anticipated.  Great plant selection considers both beauty and practicality.

Ignoring the Soil Beneath the Surface

Landscaping conversations often focus on what will be visible.  Yet some of the most important decisions happen below ground.

Healthy soil influences everything from plant growth and water retention to long-term resilience and overall garden performance.  When soil quality is overlooked, plants often struggle to establish themselves properly, regardless of how attractive they appeared at the nursery.  Investing in soil health may not produce instant visual rewards, but it frequently delivers some of the greatest long-term returns.

When Bigger Isn’t Better

Many gardens suffer from a common misconception: that adding more automatically improves a space.

More plants.  More features.  More paving.  More complexity.

In reality, effective landscape design is often about balance.  A well-planned garden creates room for plants to mature naturally and allows different elements to work together rather than compete for attention.  Sometimes restraint becomes one of the most valuable design decisions of all.

The Hidden Cost of Poor Planning

Poor planning doesn’t always show itself immediately.  In fact, the first few months can often look successful.  The real costs tend to emerge later:

  • Increased maintenance requirements.
  • Excessive water consumption.
  • Plant replacement costs.
  • Drainage problems.
  • Overgrown spaces requiring corrective work.
  • Landscapes that no longer suit how people use them.

These are the costs that rarely appear on the original installation quote but frequently become part of the garden’s future.

Looking Beyond Trends

Garden trends come and go.  One season it’s ornamental grasses.  The next it’s minimalist planting.  Then it’s outdoor entertainment areas, edible gardens, or bold colour schemes.  Trends can provide inspiration, but they should never drive an entire landscape strategy.

The most enduring gardens are those that respond to their environment, reflect the needs of the people who use them, and maintain their relevance long after current fashions have changed.

Timeless landscapes almost always outperform trendy ones in the long run.

The Smartest Landscaping Investment

When people think about landscaping investment, they often think about installation costs.  But the smartest investment isn’t necessarily spending more.

It’s making better decisions.  It’s selecting the right plants the first time.  It’s understanding how a space will evolve.  It’s planning for maintenance before problems arise.  It’s creating a landscape that performs efficiently for years rather than one that requires constant correction.

In other words, it’s designing with the future firmly in mind.

The BEST Landscaping Approach

At BEST Landscaping, we believe great gardens begin long before planting starts.

Every outdoor space is an investment, and like any investment, its long-term value depends on the quality of the decisions made at the outset.  That’s why our approach focuses on thoughtful planning, practical expertise, environmental suitability, and realistic long-term outcomes.  We look beyond immediate impact to create landscapes that remain attractive, functional, and manageable well into the future.  Because the true cost of a garden isn’t what you spend creating it.

It’s what it costs to live with it afterwards.

Team Member Profile:
Athenkosi “Sihlobo” Maphiliba

At BEST Landscaping, Athenkosi Maphiliba is known as Sihlobo, a name that means “friend” in isiXhosa. It’s a fitting nickname for someone who values teamwork, respect, and helping others.  Over the past four years, Sihlobo has grown from team member to supervisor, building his knowledge of plants, seasons, and landscape maintenance while helping to create gardens that thrive.

  1. Your nickname is Sihlobo, meaning “friend”. Do you think it reflects who you are?
I do. I enjoy working with people and helping wherever I can. Landscaping is a team effort, and I believe the best results come when people support one another and work towards the same goal.

  2. What’s the part of landscaping that excites you most?
Planting. That’s where every garden’s story begins. I enjoy putting plants into the ground and watching them grow into something that completely transforms a space.

  3. What is one thing about plants that people often underestimate?
People don’t always realise how important it is to match the right plant to the right environment. Some plants need shade, while others need full sun. Understanding the seasons and the needs of different plants helps a garden flourish.

  4. You’ve been with BEST Landscaping for four years. What has the job taught you?
It’s taught me to understand plants much better. I’ve learned how they grow, how large they’ll become, what conditions they need, and how to maintain them properly. Every project teaches you something new.

  5. What values keep you grounded, both at work and at home?
Family is very important to me. We’re a close family that believes in helping one another, respecting people, and showing kindness. Those are values I try to bring into my work every day.

Sihlobo’s passion for plants, commitment to learning, and willingness to support those around him make him a valued member of the BEST Landscaping team. Whether he’s mentoring colleagues, supervising a project, or caring for a newly planted garden, he understands that growth happens best when it’s nurtured.
